ECTP-CEU announces every two years a competition for European Urban and Regional Planning Award for urban development projects in two categories. The first category is for projects before execution phase, with released and valid building permit. So this category is in fact “competition of Designs and Designers”. Designs delegated by the Hungarian Society for Urban Planning (MUT) participate frequently on this competition. In the year 2010 the jury of MUT appointed four designs that reached standards of an international competition, including our design. It was the first time in 2010, that the International Jury made an award to a Hungarian project.

Earlier there were three national main roads crossing at town center of Nagykanizsa: roads No.7, No.61 and No.74. For this reason the most urban areas of the town were formed along the main road Fő út and the connecting squares. The main roads have been relocated from the town center many years ago, their former urban sections remained however with the same solution at the same area. The reorganisation of these public areas of the town center became therefore necessary. Main accents of reconstruction works were water and light, connecting to the natural environment of the town and to the industrial branch that used to provide work to inhabitants for a long time. The square Erzsébet tér connected to the main road Fő út is the center of local public administration and social life of the town. The Town Municipality and the Town Court are situated here, and also major social events take place on the square.

On the square the paved vehicle traffic areas of Fő út and the former main road towards the town of Zalaegerszeg were shrinked in order to gain area for walkways and promenades. With the simultaneous enrichment of functions on the former “marching area” by evolving green areas multi-functional social space could be establiched. At the first phase of works a leisure terrace and promenade were formed through the reconstruction of the emphatic right turn lane in front of Hotel Centrál, followed by complete reconstruction of other parts of the square. On the photos foreground area of Hotel Centrál is shown before and after the reconstruction.

After ceasing the connection betweeen the streets Rozgonyi u. and Vásár u. that divided the square Erzsébet tér into two separate parts, leisure function and aesthetic standard of the whole square (monuments, street music, pavilions, fountains) is significantly rising. Road terminations and properly implemented traffic management scheme have a significant role in traffic calming at the square and its close environment. Complete reconstruction of the town center along the road Fő út is going to be continued with the renewal of Deák Ferenc square, Széchenyi square, Eötvös square and with the termination of all the unnecessary traffic connections up to the Huszti square.

 

During the design works an excellent professional cooperation has been established among the engineering, landscaping and urbanist participants. Design, approval and construction works are in progress since 2005. The majority of the construction works is still ahead.
